Abstract

Insect feeding behavior can be conceptualized as two interacting control systems: mechanical control of mouthpart motor programs and gut contractions, and nutritional control encompassing nutrient sensing and endocrine signaling. Successful nutrient self‑selection by omnivores such as crickets is essential for normal growth and development. Further studies directly dissecting neural circuits centered on the brain-suboesophageal ganglion-frontal ganglion axis and how endocrine signals modulate and orchestrate motor patterns and motivational state for preferable foraging and self-selective feeding behavior.
