Abstract

Marine environments are vast, dynamic, and complex, posing significant challenges for the release and perception of sensory information that differ significantly from their terrestrial counterparts. Despite increasing interest, our knowledge about sensory behaviors in marine organisms remains relatively narrow. Recent advances in marine sensory biology have started to investigate how animals adapt to the specific constraints of aquatic environments to gather and respond appropriately to sensory information, ensuring their survival. New information about sensory organs, their underlying neuronal circuitry, receptor cells and molecules has emerged. This information illuminates how the complex marine sensory landscape is being perceived and how sensory signals are used to guide a myriad of behaviors across different animal phyla.
