Abstract

Currently, digital preservation methods enhance and streamline the characterization, evaluation and protection of singular architectural-archaeological heritage constructions. Although this field covers an extensive range of analytical and modelling processes, methods that provide comprehensive cataloguing and digitalization of the entire construction process are still required. This work provides new insights into comprehensive characterization and documentation of heritage objects within a digital environment by developing an interactive digital catalogue that enables determining construction sequences, phases and timelines, also identifying the vernacular building materials’ route. The method is validated by applying it to a singular Roman structure, the Chorrera section of Punta Paloma Roman aqueduct (located in the Baelo Claudia archaeological ensemble, Spain). The main outcomes of this research are: (i) new integration of stratigraphic data into comprehensive database as 3D digital objects, to enhance heritage structures valorization; (ii) new application of LCP techniques within GIS environment to identify vernacular material routes; (iii) new advances in Digital Preservation by developing a method that provides an interactive digital catalogue that integrates 2D and 3D elements. The proposed method provides a reliable tool to comprehensively understand and visualize heritage structures from their different components (materials and elements) with special emphasis on revealing the building history from a digital strategy. Its implementation enhances preventive conservation strategies and planning, and the selection of suitable repair materials and techniques.
