Transdisciplinary implantology: reframing specialty boundaries toward omnipractice and a unified paradigm in reconstructive dentistry – a narrative review
Abstract
This narrative review reframes reconstructive implant dentistry through the lens of transdisciplinary rationale – an integrative philosophy that brings together prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, orthodontics, and general dentistry within a shared continuum of care. Moving beyond sequential collaboration, it introduces interstice zones: operational interfaces for shared planning and execution where disciplines intersect and rely on mutual precision. The hard-tissue substructure includes orthodontic extrusion for site development, prosthetically derived mechanotransductive bone regeneration, and virtually planned macroscopic craniofacial reconstruction. Soft-tissue superstructure incorporates geometrically driven emergence-profile design for digitally executed phenotype conversion, prosthetic–tissue junction control based on topologic and morphologic principles, and papilla topography governed by prosthetic design. Prosthetic suprastructure comprises patient avatar models, prosthetic morphogenesis via computational intelligence and automation, and immersive augmented reality technologies. Through four central domains – philosophical foundations, interstice zones, educational development, and technological integration – this review outlines interdisciplinary delineation for logic-based clinical practice. Transdisciplinary implantology is supported not just by coordination but also by goals of ethical progress, informed choices, and collective responsibility in modern reconstructive dentistry.
