Abstract

Dental implants are a reliable and widely utilized solution to replace missing teeth, effectively restoring function and esthetics. However, in patients with complex treatment needs, alternative treatment options can be considered. Congenitally missing teeth, contiguous edentulous sites, limited alveolar space due to root proximity, and the need for hard tissue augmentation prior to implant placement are all clinical scenarios that may benefit from alternative treatment. Fixed prostheses incorporating ovate pontics, whether implant-supported and tooth-borne, offer a minimally invasive and efficient approach to restore these patients. Among the various pontic designs, the ovate pontic is valued for its ability to achieve optimal soft tissue esthetics. Successful implementation, however, requires precise planning and a thorough understanding of the interactions between the soft tissue and fixed restorations. This review examines the existing literature on ovate pontic design, highlighting key principles and providing a rationale for its utilization to enhance restorative outcomes.
