Oral butyrate in IBD: From enterotype stratification to a multi-omic and long-term clinical dialogue
Abstract
We read with great interest the article by Facchin et al., “Impact of oral butyrate on clinical and biochemical parameters in IBD: A randomized placebo-controlled study targeting gut microbiota,” published in Digestive and Liver Disease [1]. We commend the authors for this rigorously designed trial, which not only provides compelling evidence for the efficacy of oral microencapsulated butyrate (BLM) but also pioneers a path toward personalized nutraceutical therapy by identifying a responsive “Enterotype 1” in Crohn's disease (CD).
