Clinical prediction models in minimal hepatic encephalopathy: how far can they go?
Abstract
Xie et al. propose a prediction model for Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy (MHE) in patients with cirrhosis. The authors address an important unmet clinical need by proposing a pragmatic screening strategy based on routinely available clinical and laboratory variables [1]. The study presents several strengths: multicenter design with external validation, adequate sample size, selection of predictors that are pathophysiologically consistent with current understanding of HE, such as ammonia burden, liver failure, ascites, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding [2–5].
