Heatwaves, ageing, and dementia: assessing mortality risks and adaptation strategies in a warming China
Abstract
Climate change and population ageing represent two critical and interconnected challenges confronting global public health in the 21st century.1 The 2025 China report of the Lancet Countdown reveals that 2024 ranked as the hottest year on record in China, with heatwave-related deaths reaching 20,100 nationwide, approximately 1.7 times historical average recorded between 1986 and 2005. Moreover, combined daytime and night-time heatwave exposure risk surged by 197.9%.2 Meanwhile, the global population is ageing at an unprecedented rate.
