Abstract

Clinical assessment of left ventricular (LV) systolic function by echocardiography is based on ejection fraction or myocardial strain, which are afterload dependent. An alternative measure of systolic function that incorporates afterload is myocardial work calculated as the area of the LV pressure-volume loop, an approach requiring invasive data.1 The most accepted noninvasive alternative is the global myocardial work index (GWI), which is calculated from LV pressure-strain analysis and includes a noninvasive estimate of the systolic segment of the LV pressure curve.
