Assessing grassland herb richness through remote sensing
Abstract
Assessing herb richness of grasslands on a large scale is important for monitoring nature qualityand biodiversity. Here, we present an approach based on remote sensing, which allows yearlypredictions with a reasonable accuracy. As an indicator of herb richness, the so-called Q valueis used, ranging from 1 (very herb-poor) to 6 (very herb-rich). Based on an observational dataset of over 1,000 parcels, we achieve prediction accuracies of around 0.7 units. Although thisaccuracy is already very useful for many applications, we expect that with a suitably designedsampling campaign, sustained for a few years, it can be improved further.
