The Long and the Short of it: How Cubilin Isoforms are Affected by Genetic Variants
Abstract
The loss of proteins into the urine (proteinuria) is an important risk factor for renal and cardiovascular disease. In particular, albuminuria is associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and mortality. The most common cause of proteinuria is dysfunction of the glomerular filtration barrier, which can result in clinical manifestations such as edema due to massive urinary albumin loss.
