Abstract

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) were originally developed for the improvement of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). This initial landscape was substantially modified after the discovery that the most impressive action of SGLT2is is the reduction in the risk of cardiorenal events.1 In a triad of landmark trials conducted specifically in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), relative to placebo, SGLT2is reduced the risk of kidney failure, or death from renal and cardiovascular causes.
