Sustainable ionic liquid anodization and neodymium doping of AS21 magnesium alloy for the electrical and automotive industries
Abstract
Lightweight magnesium alloys, such as AS21, are crucial for improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions in the automotive sector. This study presents an innovative and sustainable electrochemical anodization method for the AS21 magnesium alloy using a unique ionic-liquid electrolyte composed of choline hydroxide and oxalic acid, enhanced with neodymium (Nd) doping. The process successfully developed a porous anodic film and a durable magnesium carbonate coating, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance. Nd doping, achieved through electrodeposition, improved pore strength and provided excellent anticorrosion properties. Electrodeposited Nd minimized localized corrosion and improved coating hardness and wear resistance. This research offers a sustainable surface treatment, extending the application of ionic liquid anodization to complex magnesium alloys, with potential implications for the electrical and automotive industries.
