Abstract

In regions where Kanji is used, various cultural aspects, including Kanji, have been influenced by nature. Systems handling Kanji in the past were primarily developed for educational purposes. It is important not only to learn the meanings and stroke orders of Kanji but also to understand their cultural aspects. This study proposes a calligraphy experience system that conveys the connection between Kanji and nature. Users follow the stroke order projected onto the tabletop and use a brush to write Kanji characters inspired by forms in nature. The characters transform into the forms in nature from which they were originally derived as they write. This interactive process makes calligraphy engaging and enjoyable while effectively conveying the connection between Kanji and nature. In the calligraphy experience, the tactile sensation of writing with a brush is important. In the augmented reality system developed in this study, it was found that a sponge shaped like the tip of a brush dipped in ink is more suitable than a traditional calligraphy brush that has not been dipped in ink.
