Software tooling support for atmospheric dispersion modeling of the AERMOD system
Abstract
Air pollution is a major environmental risk to public health. Identifying emission origins requires inventoried data to support air quality assessment. Simulations can be performed using the American Meteorological Society/Environmental Protection Agency Regulatory Model (AERMOD), recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). However, preparing input files is complex and error-prone because data come from multiple sources and require specific formats (e.g., SAM file). With no free functional tools available, users often rely on third parties to obtain these files. This work presents an open-source tool that automates the generation of AERMOD input files. It was evaluated using BREEZE AERMOD/ISC and an emissions inventory from the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) for 2019–2021 in Toledo, Paraná, Brazil, including particulate matter (PM\textsubscript{10}), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NO\textsubscript{x}). Results show high reliability, supported by contour-map agreement and a Kappa index (k = 1).
