The state of bioenergy research: A bibliometric analysis of review publications
Abstract
Bioenergy is increasingly recognized as a cornerstone of the global transition to sustainable energy systems. Given the field's rapid expansion and interdisciplinary scope, this study conducts a meta-level bibliometric analysis of 14,859 review papers indexed in the Scopus database. Using performance analysis and science mapping, the study identifies key research themes, ranging from biodiesel production and anaerobic digestion to sustainability frameworks and thermochemical conversion, and explores their evolution over time. The dissemination landscape is characterized by a dual-channel structure, comprising specialized applied journals and broad-scope interdisciplinary outlets. International collaboration patterns exhibit pronounced regional differentiation, reflecting the diverse research capacities and policy priorities of different countries. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the development, organization, and globalization of bioenergy research, offering valuable insights to guide future academic inquiry, policy formulation, and technological innovation. • Conducts a meta-level bibliometric analysis of nearly 15,000 bioenergy review publications. • Identifies thematic clusters, intellectual structures, and trends in bioenergy research. • Maps global dissemination patterns and international collaboration networks. • Provides insights for researchers and policymakers to advance sustainable bioenergy systems.
