Abstract

The word “respect”, originally a social concept, acquired a moral dimension during the gradual transition from a traditional, hierarchical society to a modern one where members enjoy a more egalitarian status. It was the philosopher Kant who defined its meaning, by emphasizing respect for moral law in order to avoid fluctuations in empathy. However, one can distinguish between attitude (respecting) and feeling (feeling respect), and observe how every person seeks to be recognised, that is, to inspire respect. This distinction is particularly evident in the caregiving relationship.
