Abstract

This study examines the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the service capacity of sports research institutions using panel data from 297 Chinese cities from 2007 to 2023. The results show that AI development significantly enhances institutional service capacity. Mechanism analysis indicates that AI strengthens digital financial foundations and facilitates the reallocation of resources between research-oriented and service-oriented activities. Further analyses reveal that the positive effect of AI is more pronounced in non-resource cities, research-oriented contexts, and competitive sports research settings. These findings highlight the role of AI-driven financial development in strengthening public research service capacity.
