Abstract

Redox flow batteries, with their inherent safety, design flexibility, and long cycle life, have emerged as one of the most promising long-duration energy storage technologies. Current research has extensively advanced the technical iterations and performance optimizations of various components of redox flow batteries, such as electrodes, separators, and electrolytes. Meanwhile, critical aspects of redox flow battery energy storage systems, including system state assessment, pump control strategy optimization, thermal management technology, and grid-connected operation control, have also garnered significant attention. However, existing studies predominantly focus on component or subsystem-level improvements, lacking a systematic review of system-level research on redox flow batteries. To address this, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the research progress in redox flow battery systems, aiming to summarize current technological breakthroughs, analyzing existing challenges, and outline future development directions of redox flow battery energy storage systems.
