Abstract

Education and learning are at the heart of our efforts both to adapt to change and to transform our troubled world. In a context of existential planetary challenges, democratic backsliding, and disruptive technologies, an important inquiry pertains to what capabilities people need to thrive in the (near) future. While much schooling still reflects an exterior-oriented, economic growth-focused modernist paradigm, a widening literature urges a broader orientation: recognizing humanity’s embeddedness in nature, including multiple dimensions of human development, honoring plural worldviews, and cultivating capabilities for transforming our crisis-ridden world. In this conceptual article I conduct an integrative review, informed by critical interpretive synthesis, across three paradigmatic educational approaches: reformist/adaptive (e.g., 21st Century Skills), critical/relational (e.g. Wild Pedagogies), and transformative/integrative (e.g., Inner Development Goals). This paradigmatic/worldview analysis surfaces strengths and limits, while illuminating how tensions can become complementarities ripe for synthesis. On that basis I then propose a minimal, fourfold meta-map of Human Democratic Capabilities (HDC), organized by relations to Self, Others, Whole, and Future, each culminating in an evolved capstone capability of Self-leadership, Collaboration, Moral compass, and Purpose. I conceptually ground this meta-map in the Human Capabilities Approach (HCA) to bridge educational paradigms, offer normative direction without sacrificing freedom, and support design and evaluation. The article offers a visionary guidepost for educational design and inquiry, supporting researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to reimagine what an education of the future could and should look like.
