Abstract

Genetic counselors (GCs), with their unique psychosocial and genomics expertise skillset, practice at the forefront of genomic medicine, interpreting genomic data and explaining its implications to individuals and families. Genetic counseling has grown and evolved dramatically since the first GC graduate programs (GCGPs) began in the United States over fifty years ago, with the continued expansion of programs across the globe. The terminal degree in genetic counseling in the US remains a master’s degree, with educational, research, and clinical training completed in about 21 months.
