Abstract

To increase access to inpatient genetic testing, we offered a pre-test genetics education video for adults admitted and referred for a cardiovascular genetics evaluation. An unexpected benefit of this study was that we were able to improve access to genetic counseling services for patients who belong to racial minority groups. Previous research has established that disparities exist amongst racial and ethnic groups in accessing genetic counseling and testing. In part, this is because individuals from minority backgrounds are often less likely to be referred for an outpatient genetics evaluation.
