Abstract

In the current fiscal environment, many hospitals suffer significant budget shortfalls due to shrinking reimbursements in the face of ballooning expenses, and they must seek to economize wherever possible while meeting medical standard of care. For genetic testing to be approved on inpatients at Children’s National Hospital (CNH), the results must be medically necessary for immediate management. Importantly, if patient discharge is anticipated prior to availability of results, testing should be deferred to the outpatient setting since, clearly, results would not alter patient care while in the hospital.
