Abstract

In addition to linear broadcasts, TV broadcasters provide on-demand news clips that are segmentalized by topic on their websites. On-demand news clips increase selectivity for TV news. In other words, the popularization of such clips has changed the TV news exposure environment. Such high selectivity can facilitate a situation in which people who only prefer entertainment news avoid hard news such as political, economic, and international news. We investigated the news consumption styles of news videos on an application that provided two types of news exposure forms: linear broadcasts and news clips. Audiences primarily used linear broadcasts either alone or together with news clips. These viewing patterns were associated with audiences' news-selection criteria and preferred genres. Although high selectivity may enable hard-news avoidance, soft-news viewing in the first period was positively associated with hard-news viewing in the second period. This study is the first to demonstrate news exposure behavior regarding linear news and news clips, excluding device effects.
