Leadless pacing in the context of Staphylococcus aureus infection: A solution or reason to pause?
Abstract
Bacteremia in patients who require cardiac pacing creates a challenging clinical scenario. Rates of infection overall are lower with leadless devices compared to traditional transvenous devices1. Thus, they are often considered when pacing is required for patients with recent infection or who are at high risk of infection. However, infections can occur when these devices are implanted while a patient is bacteremic. It is therefore important to check blood cultures and perform appropriate cardiac imaging prior to implantation of a leadless pacemaker when clinical circumstances suggest a high risk of bacteremia.
