Abstract

Pacemaker (PM) battery longevity is a clinically important issue, particularly in elderly patients at higher risk for device replacement-related complications. Sleep function, a sleep-specific rate reduction feature, lowers the programmed lower rate limit (LRL) during the sleep period and thereby suppresses unnecessary pacing. We present a unique case of a 90-year-old man in whom activation of the sleep-specific rate reduction feature significantly reduced excessive atrial pacing, resulting in an estimated one-year extension of battery longevity. Sleep-specific rate reduction features during sleep periods could be a simple and effective strategy to prolong PM battery longevity.
