Beyond subawards: Funding Global South institutions to lead biomedical research
Abstract
We write from research groups in Brazil, India, and South Africa that are often showcased as Global South success stories. Over three decades we have helped lead multinational consortia on tuberculosis, HIV, and vaccines, and trained hundreds of clinicians and scientists. Nevertheless, every grant cycle reminds us that our institutions are still rarely trusted as primary stewards of global research funding.
