Infectious disease eradication—the pinnacle of public health achievement
Abstract
The eradication of an infectious disease (“the permanent reduction to zero of the worldwide incidences of infection caused by a specific agent as a result of deliberate efforts” has been christened the “holy grail” of public health [1]. But holy grails that go unchallenged can stymie the progress of science to the detriment of society, as Galileo discovered when attempting to convince the church and opinion leaders of his day of a heliocentric solar system. Thus, a tilt at the eradication windmill from a One Health perspective is fitting [2].
