Abstract

We report a rare case of monomicrobial gas gangrene of the upper limb caused solely by Terrisporobacter glycolicus, an obligate anaerobe, in a 24-year-old male with a recent traumatic (burn) injury and history of substance abuse, who developed rapid-onset swelling, pain, and skin discolouration in the left arm, ultimately requiring surgical amputation. The pathogen was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and whole genome sequencing (WGS). This case emphasises the potential severity of anaerobic monomicrobial infections in trauma cases and underscores the importance of early recognition and surgical intervention in necrotising infections.
