The potential mechanism of Ocimum sanctum on trachea injury in cigarette smoking induced rats: Experimental and pharmacoinformatic analysis
Abstract
Background Cigarette smoking (CS) contributes to the incidence of acute tracheal injury. Ocimum sanctum leaves extract (EEDK) has been applied as the antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-cancer agent. However, the protective effect of EEDK on tracheal damage after CS distribution is still unknown. Methods This study aims to discover the potential of EEDK in relieving the tracheal damage exposed to CS. The animals were subjected to 2 cigarettes and administered both doses of EEDK (100 and 200 mg/kg) for four weeks. Hematological and histoarchitectural changes were measured after CS exposure. The pharmacoinformatic methods were conducted to explore the bioactivity of phytochemicals from EEDK against CS-induced acute trachea injury. Results The administration of EEDK significantly ameliorated the trachea tissue exposed to CS. The EEDK effectively improved the levels of hematological parameters compared to the CS-treated group ( p
