Abstract

Skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States, and lapses in its care are a frequent source of litigation.1-3 In a 2018 study, dermatology was the most frequently implicated specialty in keratinocyte carcinoma litigation.3-5 Melanoma, however, may pose unique medicolegal risk due to its aggressive behavior and high metastatic potential. To better characterize the scope and nature of litigation related to cutaneous malignancies, we conducted a comprehensive review of physician-related medicolegal cases involving skin cancer.
