Hantavirus for the dermatologist
Abstract
In April 2026, a cruise ship departing from Argentina became the source of an Andes hantavirus outbreak, resulting in 13 cases and 3 deaths with documented person-to-person transmission.1 While hantavirus remains rare and the rates of cutaneous findings remain uncertain, dermatologists may be among the first to see affected patients as cutaneous findings may appear early in the illness, sometimes before systemic complications develop.2 These findings may resemble other dermatologic conditions, highlighting the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion in the appropriate clinical context.
