Abstract

A 28-year-old female with medication-treated type II diabetes mellitus and untreated hypercholesterolemia, but no hypertension, presented with lipemia retinalis. Bilateral arterial and venous yellowing was noted (Figure 1A, Optos wide-field colour photo; right eye shows the posterior pole is slightly blurred due to posterior subcapsular cataracts). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed an inner retinal hyperreflective band (Figure 1C, red arrow) consistent with a paracentral acute middle maculopathy-like lesion, which most likely represented inner retinal lipid deposition.
