Surgical anatomy: Not “just” for anatomists
Abstract
When asked to give an honorary lecture on the making of modern hip preservation surgery, Professor Reinhold Ganz wrote “[Vascular] anatomy in surgical textbooks is mainly based on descriptions of anatomists being without any intention to exploit it.”1 Many of us went to Medical School anatomy lectures and memorized the origins, insertions, and innervations of various structures and were subsequently asked to identify them during surgical training. However, the making of a “true” open or arthroscopic surgeon is not wrote anatomy, but rather its elegant application in accessing and treating pathology.
