Abstract

This study investigates how the road network in rapidly developing cities like Doha metropolitan fosters urban development and enhances urban life quality. Using spatiotemporal analysis through GIS, the research explores urban growth trends based on road network evolution. It identifies three key factors influencing this growth: (1) megaprojects and connectivity, (2) national policy and land use, and (3) population trends and road network coverage. These factors are analyzed using Dot Density Maps, Area & Point Marker maps, and Isochrone Orthogonal Rake System (ORS) analysis to assess travel efficiency by car, cycling, and walking. GIS Geohash Density Mapping is applied to chart the percentage of areas covered by the road network and pinpoint areas experiencing the most growth. The study concludes that the ideal direction for Doha's urban growth is toward the west and north, and it proposes a land-use development plan that suggests future megaproject locations, potential areas for infill development and road network expansion. This research provides valuable insights for urban planners globally by offering a method to assess road network evolution and urban growth trends, applicable to rapidly urbanizing cities worldwide. • Investigates the road network's role in urban growth within Doha metropolitan. • Uses GIS for spatiotemporal analysis of road network evolution. • Proposes future development and road network expansion in Doha metropolitan. • Provides insights for urban planners in rapidly developing cities.
