Real-world quality of life and healthcare resource utilization in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis – Circular definition of CVRM comorbidities undermines the validity of core subgroup comparisons
Abstract
We read with interest the real-world study by Marquardt and colleagues on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) [1]. We write to highlight a methodological issue in the core subgroup stratification that, in our view, substantially affects the interpretation of the study’s primary conclusions: the circular use of cardiometabolic risk factors that are required for MASH diagnosis as “additional CVRM comorbidities.” This distinction is not addressed in the paper’s discussion or limitations section, yet it has important implications for how clinicians and payers interpret disease burden in MASH.
