Abstract

Function of the musculoskeletal system is suddenly disrupted by peripheral nerve injuries. Even with advances in microsurgical reconstruction philosophies and techniques, many patients have continued weakness, altered sensation, and pervasive pain after surgery for their nerve injury. These shortcomings demonstrate the tremendous opportunities to address our knowledge gaps: we struggle to establish accurate prognosis for nerve injury, which introduces variability in timing and type of surgical treatment as well as the subsequent outcomes.
