Abstract

journal, in which the authors identified serum microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with electrocardiographic abnormalities in patients with Chagas disease (CD) 1 .This study suggests that circulating miRNAs may serve as biomarkers for Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC), a finding that has aroused our keen interest. After thoroughly examining this research and other relevant literature, we sought to further evaluate the association between circulating miRNAs and different clinical stages of CD.CD, caused by an infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, affects an estimated 7-8 million people worldwide.During the chronic phase, most individuals remain asymptomatic for several years and are classified as having the indeterminate form. However, approximately 30% of infected individuals eventually develop the cardiac form, chronic CCC, which is characterized by inflammation, myocardial injury, conduction abnormalities, and fibrotic remodeling 2,3 .CCC represents the most severe clinical manifestation of chronic CD and is the principal cause of morbidity and premature mortality among the affected patients 4 .The study by Vucetich et al. indicates that Chagas cardiomyopathy carries a considerable public health burden, urther emphasizing the need for accessible biomarkers to aid early detection and risk J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f
