Self-lubricant TiAl(V)N films for high temperature applications: A comparative study of monolithic and multilayer films architectures
Abstract
TiAl(V)N coatings with increasing V content were deposited using DC magnetron sputtering in both monolithic and multilayer (TiAlN/TiAlVN) architectures to assess the effect of V impact and film architecture on mechanical, oxidation, and tribological behaviour. Monolithic and multilayer coatings showed similar morphology regardless of the V concentration and the coating architecture. The oxidation resistance of the multilayer coatings is better than that of the monolithic coatings since, in the former case, the presence of the TiAlN layers allows the formation of a more protective oxide layer, rich in Al 2 O 3 . Similarly, the multilayer configuration enhanced the tribological performance of the coatings, showing a progressive reduction in friction and greater wear resistance compared to both the reference and corresponding monolithic coatings, particularly at elevated temperatures. • Monolithic and multilayer TiAl(V)N coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering • Multilayer designs delay vanadium diffusion and enhance oxidation resistance • Vanadium addition improves high temperature tribological performance of TiAlN films • Formation of lubricious V 2 O 5 oxides contributes to reduced wear at 600 °C • Multilayer design provides stable oxidation and superior tribological performance
