Understanding two corrosion mechanisms of 20Cr25Ni2.5Al alumina-forming austenitic alloy in supercritical carbon dioxide
Abstract
The 20Cr25Ni2.5Al AFA alloy demonstrated an order of magnitude lower oxidation rate constant compared to the reference alloy in supercritical CO2 (sCO2) at 20 MPa and 650 ℃. Both alloys exhibited uniform corrosion and localized corrosion zones, but the fraction of localized corrosion zones was reduced by more than 50% in Al - modified alloy. The atomic structure of the multilayer oxide scales in both zones was precisely characterized through AC-TEM analysis. The Ni rich precipitates resulted in the disruption of continuous Al2O3 layer and localized corrosion. The corrosion mechanisms of the AFA alloy in sCO2 were schematically elucidated.
