Abstract

Skeletal muscle is a central regulator of systemic metabolism, accounting for nearly half of total body mass and playing a critical role in glucose disposal, lipid oxidation, amino acid turnover, and overall energy balance (Baskin et al., 2015; Rolfe & Brown, 1997). Beyond its mechanical function, muscle acts as an endocrine organ through the secretion of myokines that coordinate communication with the brain, liver, heart, and adipose tissue (Ribeiro et al., 2025). Accordingly, both the quantity and quality of skeletal muscle are fundamental determinants of metabolic health and long-term physiological resilience (De Santana et al., 2019).
