Predicting the storage modulus of granite after high-temperature exposure
Abstract
A method was developed in this context to predict the temperature-dependent storage modulus of granite based on room-temperature (25 °C) measurements. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed on granite samples across a temperature range of 25-500 °C (25 °C, 100 °C, 200 °C, 300 °C, 400 °C and 500 °C) to characterize the frequency and temperature dependence of the storage modulus. Our approach establishes a predictive relationship between elevated-temperature behavior and room-temperature frequency sweeps. Validation against experimental data reveals excellent agreement, with predictions exhibiting a maximum relative error of 3.89%. The storage modulus demonstrates characteristic frequency dependence, showing rapid initial increase followed by stabilization and displaying a gradual thermal softening behavior with increasing temperature. This method significantly reduces experimental cost by merely enabling high-temperature property estimation from room-temperature tests, offering substantial efficiency gains for rock mechanics investigations.
