Abstract

The concept of health security typically relates to how sovereign states protect their populations' from threats such as pandemics, extreme weather events and terrorism. Under unilateral “America First” policies, its meaning and relevance expanded throughout 2025 to include aggressive trade tariffs, outright climate change denialism and threats to other nations' sovereignty. Canada's increasing vulnerability to these risks serves as a unique and powerful reminder that health security is a subdiscipline of international relations and security studies.
