Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains a present and ongoing global health threat. In 2019, 4·95 million deaths were associated with AMR globally; this number is projected to rise to 8·22 million by 2050.1 Despite this prediction, the investment landscape in global health and AMR is diminishing, as highlighted in July, 2025 by the UK government’s decision to de-fund the Fleming Fund, its flagship AMR surveillance and capacity building programme for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). International funding cuts hamper global efforts to combat AMR, compromising global biosecurity and disproportionally impacting LMICs; thus, many international organisations have called for new and equitable global partnerships, with a focus on sustainability.
