Abstract

In April 2026, the National Institute for Health Care and Research (NIHR) announced that it would award £2·31 million to projects aimed at preventing chronic health conditions as part of its Invention for Innovation (i4i) scheme. The most recent round of innovations ranges from digital self-management platforms to home-based monitoring tools. Chronic disease management is crucial for healthy ageing in a world in which global life expectancy is rising. Although increased research funding into chronic diseases is an important step in both the prevention and management of chronic conditions, how effective are such approaches and what barriers exist for further research and usage?
