Humanity first requires accountability first
Abstract
The editorial “Humanity first, not country first” confronts a devastating reality: schoolchildren killed in missile strikes, WHO-verified attacks on healthcare facilities, destruction of critical civilian infrastructure, and mass displacement across the Middle East.1 The call to place human life at the center of decision-making is quite timely and compelling. I write not to dismiss this aspiration but to argue that the scale of suffering demands a more operationally grounded approach that confronts the structural conditions which make a “humanity first” approach seem unattainable.
