A humanity-first approach: the solidarity of the shaken in times of war
Abstract
In its recent editorial calling for a “humanity-first” approach to global conflicts, The Lancet Regional Health—Europe raises a fundamental question: should decisions be guided by national interests or by the protection of human life?1 This question resonates with particular urgency in the context of the current escalation of conflicts worldwide, which have resulted in devastating human suffering and profound consequences for both physical and mental health. Wars in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Lebanon, Iran, Syria, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others, have killed or injured hundreds of thousands, displaced millions, and dismantled healthcare infrastructures.
