Abstract

Although hydrogen (H2) is often touted as a promising energy carrier that could help to decarbonise the global energy system, it does have drawbacks. In principle, hydrogen can be produced and consumed with near-zero carbon emissions. However, it also warms the climate by indirectly extending the lifetime of methane and produces greenhouse gases such as ozone and stratospheric water vapour. With this in mind, Zutao Ouyang (Stanford University, CA, USA) and colleagues analyse trends in global H2 sources and sinks from 1990 to 2020 and construct a comprehensive global hydrogen budget for the decade 2010–2020.
