Abstract

Indigenous peoples, environmental scientists, nature campaigners, and others have long advocated that nature underpins human survival and flourishing. As environmental damages and associated dependencies have become increasingly obvious, that recognition has broadened to actors not traditionally concerned with the natural world – including the military and security, and business sectors. A 2026 national security assessment by the UK Government confirms ecosystem and biodiversity degradation, both domestic and international, as real threats to the country’s security and prosperity.
