Abstract

Epidemiology has long examined the determinants of health and disease, encouraging behavioral improvements and guiding evidence-based clinical practice. Since the 1980s, social epidemiology has increasingly expanded and consolidated this scope by exploring “upstream” determinants—those rooted in the social environment—emphasizing the need for structural changes rather than individual responsibility alone.1
